Make a difference

We want to make a difference

This year our advanced English course first had the topic “Nature and Environment.” In class we talked about the environment and how certain things can be harmful to our planet. We learned a lot about pollution, deforestation, intensive farming, et cetera, and discussed different ways to reduce the damage being done to our ecosystem.

Then we started a new topic called “Making a difference,” and heard about different people for example Emily Pankhurst and  Martin Luther King (leader of the American Civil Rights Movement, assassinated in 1968), who made a big difference in their own and other people’s lives. He proved that it doesn’t take violence to express one’s opinion. The important part for us was that it doesn’t take an important or famous person to do something to make a change, anyone can accomplish something if they put their mind to it.

So we decided to do something ourselves, to start a project that would benefit others so that we could also make a difference.

Our first idea was to help younger students in various subjects. We divided our class into groups and on certain days we did tutoring for them. We tried to make it interesting and fun by playing learning games. Some classes even wanted one more day of tutoring. With this idea, we hoped to show students on the one hand that learning can also be fun, especially if it is done in a group of people, rather than alone and on the other hand that more experienced students share their knowledge with younger ones to help and support.

Our second idea was to have two trash cans in every class room so that paper can be separated and recycled. We made posters and created instructions as well, and two people went into class rooms together to replace trash cans and to explain the new recycling system. Separating trash is really important to us. Considering the limited resources on earth, especially oil, which is required for making plastic, it is important to reuse as much as we can.

All in all, we have learned a lot from this topic, and we hope that we have successfully made a difference in some way.
